Fun and frolics at fundraiser
Hundreds turned up at the Family Fun Day to raise money for St Mary’s Church Hall Building Fund.
Held at the Awapuni Donkey Farm in Gordonton, Sally-Ann Riddell says it was a fantastic day for a good cause – and much fun was had.
“There were rides for the kids, being towed behind a quad bike, a cafe, food, drinks, BBQ, crafts for sale, raffles, and also a name the new-born donkey twins competition. It was a fantastic weekend of parish fundraising in a beautiful setting.”
The Hall Fund was started three years ago with the goal of raising $200,000. “We have raised about $50,000 since then. Some of of this has been from donations from individuals and organisations, but most of it from fundraising events. We want to hold two large fundraisers per year.”
“Thanks to all of you who came and supported us at the weekend and a huge thank you to Bryan and Jenny Clausen for allowing us to have this event at their wonderful property.”
There were plenty of volunteers who helped who were not involved with St Mary’s, which was greatly appreciated. “People helped with the donkey rides and serving cups of tea. Greenlea Meats donated the meat for the BBQ and then gave a very very significant donation, a huge thanks to the team there.”
She said there is a small, but strong-willed group at St Mary’s who always give 100% of themselves when it comes to raising money for the new hall.
“It is always the same group of people who offer their time and help. Kim Simpson and myself are the co-ordinators of these fundraisers and we are always blown away by this small group’s enthusiasm and stamina and doing what they are told – LOL!
“We have four elderly couples in their 80s and a couple of singles, who are amazing and are always give us younger ones so much support. They are never discouraged by the hard work and we adore them for that. They inspire us.
“Thank you to all the team of helpers that made this past weekend a huge success.”
